Singapore is an island-country that has limited freshwater supply. The country has moved away from total reliance on imported water and the limited water supply from its water catchment areas, by investing in research to find alternative water supply. This has brought about desalinated water and NEWater. NEWater is high grade reclaimed water produced from treated sewage water. It is possible that other sources of water such as surface runoff that flow into the many canals around the island can one day be treated to produce usable or drinkable water.
